The timber box with faux burr walnut painted finish and rounded lid with inset gilt panel bearing the monogram ‘MJ’, opening from the top and front to a fitted interior, housing chess and games pieces and associated paraphernalia. An inset brass band engraved
‘H. RODRIGUES. 42 PICADILLY. LONDON’ attributes the box to the well-regarded stationer Henry Rodrigues of London, while the branded English registration mark dates the box’s manufacture to November of 1879.
