The original ‘Warwick Urn’ was discovered in 1770 by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter, antiquarian and art dealer in Rome. The vase dated to the second century C.E., was found submerged at the bottom of a lake in Hadriens Villa. The artist Piranesi oversaw the vases restoration and produced a number of etchings and drawings of the vase. Later acquired by George Greville, the second Earl of Warwick (from where the vase it takes its name), the original now resides in the Burrel Collection in Glasgow.
