The altar table or butsudan with a detachable black lacquer top, traditionally shaped upturned ends with engraved and gilded brass kanagu detailing, beneath a gilt-wood band punctuated by further kanagu cartouche form plating depicting imperial chrysanthemums, foliate scrolls and the sacred Buddhist shippo or 'seven treasures' pattern. The primary frieze and brackets richly adorned by intricately pierced and carved gilt-wood floral, foliate, and kawa or
'winding stream' motifs, symbolising the course of life and continuity, to two further gilt-wood bands with kanagu of conforming decoration enclosing a secondary frieze of pierced and carved scrollwork above an apron carved to resemble heavenly clouds, descending to fluted cabriole legs and reverse scrolled acanthus feet, the whole raised atop a rectangular stretcher with gilt-wood frieze and apron of conforming decoration.
