Cast after an antique Roman copy of a Hellenistic bronze original, circa 200 – 150 B.C. The original group represented the Greek king Menelaos holding the body of the hero Patroclus on the battlefield in their fight against the Trojans. The group is best preserved in the marble group in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence.
