(G53) A harmonious depiction of the benevolent bodhisattva, the composition with a pleasing symmetry of form, her head crowned with an intricate pierced foliate diadem, centred by the carved effigy of the seated Amitabha Buddha, her hair arranged elegantly into an elaborate high chignon, some tresses looped around her pendulous lobes and trailing in tendrils over her level shoulders, her rippling hairline dramatically rendered, framing the angelic face with plump, harmonious features, with an urna indented in the centre of her forehead, the high-arching eyebrows surmounting heavy-lidded half-closed eyes forming narrow slits, her full lips softly pursed, garlanded with an intricate multi-tiered necklace against the open chest, a shawl wrapped around her shoulders, a brahmanic cord tied around the torso, securing the skirt of her dhoti, the even surface of the fabric obscuring her legs and feet, seated peacefully in dhyanasana, the figure enlivened with splendid gold pigment.

Provenance: In the private collection of Mohinda Dharmapala, Sri Lanka, prior to May 1984.
